David Deutsch. Published January 2011. ISBN 9780521440505. Misha Shmeleva. Published March 2012. ISBN 978-2-940771-04-6. ISBN: 978-2-940771-04-6. In this book, the author, David Deutsch, challenges the popular view that the universe is "digital" and that "reality" is "fabricated" by some non-material entities and processes. He argues that our universe is in fact "digital" and that "reality" is itself nothing but the universe "fabricated" by the universe. To support his argument, Deutsch, a professor of the science of complexity, draws on ideas from quantum theory, the mathematics of fractals, computer science, psychology, philosophy, and theology. A former academic who recently left academia, Deutsch has a healthy respect for facts and statistics, and he often brings to bear to help his case against "digital" reality the most rigorously established theories, including those from physics and mathematics. He also points to common, intuitive experiences to argue for a "fabricated" or "digital" universe. Deutsch attacks the notion of "digital" reality first from a scientific perspective, suggesting that quantum theory and the theory of complexity refute the classical world view of Newton and Einstein. He next argues that some of the most advanced mathematics, and the mathematics of self-replicating computers in particular, suggest that there is a parallel universe--or multiple universes--in which our universe is digital. In the final section of the book, he makes a strong case against a "digital" or "digital" universe. The author was born in the UK in 1951 and educated at the University of Oxford. He left Oxford in 1978, later joined Cambridge, and is now at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He is a leading light in the field of theoretical complexity, and his mathematical work on this field has earned him the Henri Poincare Prize and the Wolf Prize. He is also the author of The Fabric of Reality: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Science (Pantheon Books: New York, 1993). He is married to Linda Hoagland, who was the first astronaut to walk on the moon. He has written for various magazines, including New Scientist and Times Higher Education Supplement, and has published over 100 articles. He was the first to speak on the BBC Radio Science Show, and has appeared on the BBC TV programs Tomorrow's World, Screen Two, and
